NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE: THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES

Nathaniel Hawthorne: THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES

Miss Hebzibah Pyncheon lived in the House of the seven gables, situated in Pyncheon street. It was a dark, old house with a small room in the front gable.

Today that room became a store again, for the first time in many years. Hepzibah did not want to work in the store because people in town didn’t like her, but she needed money for food and other supplies. The only friend that she had was a young man Mr Holgrave.

One day a bus stopped in the Pyncheon street. A young girl said goodbye to the driver and went to the front of the house. It was Phoebe. She is Hepzibah’s cousin. She went into the house. She wanted to help her cousin. She saw a lot of pictures of men and their faces were cold. Hepzibah said that this house is cursed. The next day Hepzibah’s brother Clifford came to the house. They talked and ate breakfast. Phoebe went to the store. A fat man in an expensive black coat came in. He must be important, Phoebe thought. He is Phoebe’s cousin, Judge Pyncheon. Judge went to his room and sat on the chair. The next day they found him death. Hepzibah said that she bought the house, but she doesn’t need to give the man this money because he is dead.
